Doctor Who Series Four: Buildup to the Finale

Posted by: Ace on: July 4, 2008

I watched the latest Doctor Who episodes, Turn Left and The Stolen Earth this week. This leaves me with one more episode for this series, the yet-to-be-screened final episode.

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

I was in total *squee* mode over Rose’s return, but… this isn’t the Rose we all know and love, is it? Rose was characterised by strong compassion and empathy, trying to help those in distress, even if it’s just a kind word or touch. But this Rose… she bluntly tells Donna she’s going to die, and sends her out to do so without much sympathy or any reassurance. She walks calmly around London as people die and riot and flee, hardened and purposeful, and with a giant gun. (Yes, Badass Rose is appealing, but can’t she be badass and compassionate? At home in battle, more or less, but caring about the innocent lives?) All she cares about is getting to the Doctor. Maybe she’ss all concerned with the impending doom of the multiverse, I don’t know. But she’s not the Rose we all know. And what’s with the accent? I do a better Rose accent than Billie does in this, and I’m Australian! (Albeit one who watches mostly British television, but still.) So while I love the episodes, I’m a little disappointed. It’s a more selfish, uncaring Rose we see here. Maybe there’s a reason for this: I’ll have to wait and see.

There’s all kinds of crazy rumours flying around about the final. Donna is really Time Lady Romana. Harriet Jones is the Red Dalek. Harriet Jones is the Master. (Er…) The Doctor’s hand regenerates so there’s two Doctors running around. (Feel sorry for the universe, people. Think: two of them babbling on at warp speed, licking things, getting into trouble…) The doctor regenerates into Chris Eccleston’s Doctor. Or Paul McGann’s. The Doctor regenerates entirely and David Tennant leaves Doctor Who. The Doctor regenerates into two people and one returns to the other universe with Rose and goes all domestic, and the other keeps up his Emo Time Lord routine. Rose goes all Bad Wolf again. The Time Lords from another universe help out. The master turns up.

The list goes on and on. Most of them are improbable. However, if either Rose and the Doctor go domestic, or the Doctor regenerates into a previous incarnation, the Master turns up, or Donna turns out to be unexpectedly special somehow, then I solemnly swear I wil sing and dance to a Billie Piper song and post it on the internet.

Because I’d be so hyped I wouldn’t care.
